A birthday was supposed to mark another year of life. Instead, October 1 became the day Ken Urker’s family began grieving his death.
Urker, the partner of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and father of their daughter, Aurora Raina, was found unresponsive at a residence in Raceland, Louisiana. The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a call at about 6:15 p.m. and found 34-year-old Kenan Urker dead at the scene. Authorities have said the investigation remains ongoing.
For Blanchard, the news was almost impossible to process.
Speaking to PEOPLE, she said Urker died following what she described as an overdose, while stressing that she did not know whether it was intentional. She also said he had not been in a good state of mind recently.
“I’m in disbelief. I can’t think,” Blanchard said, describing grief so overwhelming that she had screamed until her throat hurt.
But beneath the shock was another painful subject: the years Urker spent living under an extraordinary level of public attention.
Blanchard said he faced relentless scrutiny and cyberbullying across social media, describing the treatment as cruelty no person should have to endure. She believes the pressure had a profound impact on him.
Yet Urker’s story, in Blanchard’s telling, was never supposed to end with headlines about controversy or tragedy.
It began years earlier, when the two connected while Blanchard was incarcerated. Their relationship developed through correspondence and eventually became an engagement. They separated, their lives moved in different directions, and Blanchard later married Ryan Anderson.
Then came another turn.
After Blanchard’s split from Anderson, she and Urker found their way back to one another in 2024. Their reunion brought with it something bigger than their relationship: the birth of their daughter, Aurora, later that year.
That child is now at the centre of Blanchard’s grief.
Remembering Urker, she described him as her “soulmate” and spoke of a bond she believed could survive time, distance and even death.
Most importantly, she said, he loved Aurora.
That may ultimately be the part of Ken Urker’s story Blanchard wants his daughter to inherit—not the internet debates, not the public scrutiny, and not the circumstances surrounding his final hours, but the memory of a father who loved his child.
As investigators continue examining what happened, many questions remain unanswered. The precise circumstances and official cause of death have not been fully established publicly.
For now, there is only a grieving mother trying to protect her young daughter, two families confronting an unimaginable loss, and a birthday that ended with a goodbye nobody expected.
Blanchard has asked for privacy and compassion as both families mourn.
And for Aurora, the future will mean growing up with stories about the father she was loved by—and remembering him through the people who knew him beyond the screen.
