Spanish actor Javier Bardem has reaffirmed his willingness to speak out on political and social issues, arguing that remaining silent in the face of injustice is not an option. In a candid interview with Variety, Bardem questioned why he would not use his platform, emphasizing a personal responsibility to address what he يرى as wrong.
Reflecting on his outspoken support for Palestine, Bardem recalled his statement at the Academy Awards, where he ended his speech with “No to war, and free Palestine.” He admitted he had anticipated backlash from the audience but was instead met with applause. However, he noted that such positions often come with consequences, revealing that pressure exists within the industry to avoid criticizing Israel’s actions in Gaza.
He pointed to an example of a fellow actor losing representation due to pro-Palestinian views, describing it as evidence of a flawed system. Bardem acknowledged that he himself may have faced professional setbacks, including fewer project offers and lost commercial opportunities. Still, he downplayed the impact, stressing that his career is not confined to Hollywood and that he remains based in Spain.
Beyond politics, Bardem addressed cultural attitudes toward masculinity, drawing on his upbringing in 20th-century Spain. He criticized traditional notions that position men as dominant and in control, calling such beliefs fundamentally misguided. According to him, these ideas foster toxic masculinity when left unchallenged.
As a father, Bardem expressed concern that regressive views on gender roles may be resurfacing. He credited his late mother, Pilar Bardem, for shaping his understanding that strength and sacrifice are not exclusive to men.
The interview also touched on his personal life, where Bardem spoke warmly about his wife, Penélope Cruz. Describing himself as her biggest admirer, he highlighted the importance of mutual respect and support in their relationship, adding that working together allows them to strengthen both their emotional bond and family life.
