For Ben Affleck, giving relationship advice at the dinner table has apparently become a dangerous game.
The actor recently admitted that his children are no longer willing to simply listen when their father starts offering wisdom about love and relationships. Instead, they have something far more powerful than a parenting book: his own history.
Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Affleck recalled trying to comment on someone else’s relationship when his 17-year-old quickly reminded him that he might not exactly be the final authority on romance.
The response was devastatingly simple: “Oh, like you’re the expert on relationships?”
And apparently, that was only the beginning.
Affleck said his children now exchange knowing looks whenever he launches into one of his parental lectures. What was once one teenager rolling their eyes has apparently evolved into a family routine in which Affleck realises that he has become, in his own words, something of a “caricature” in the story.
It is an unusually funny consequence of growing up in a famous family: children who have watched their parents’ lives unfold in public eventually develop their own very sharp commentary.
Affleck shares three children — Violet, 20, Fin, 17, and Samuel, 14 — with actress Jennifer Garner. The couple married in 2005 and divorced in 2018.
Affleck’s later marriage to Jennifer Lopez added another highly public chapter to his personal life. The pair, who had previously been engaged nearly two decades earlier, reunited and married in 2022. Their marriage ended in 2024.
Yet Affleck has spoken respectfully about Lopez since their separation, previously telling GQ that there was “nothing but respect” between them and describing the breakup as lacking scandal or intrigue.
His relationship with Garner, meanwhile, appears to have remained warm and cooperative. Affleck has spoken openly about his appreciation for his former wife and even wanted her to play his on-screen wife in Animals, although the role ultimately went to Kerry Washington.
He said he would still love the opportunity to work with Garner, describing her as “fabulous” and saying he was profoundly grateful for their relationship.
But perhaps the most revealing part of Affleck’s story isn’t about Lopez, Garner or Hollywood at all.
It is about the strange moment every parent eventually faces: the day your children stop seeing you as the all-knowing adult and start seeing you as a human being with a history.
For Affleck, that history happens to include two very public marriages.
So when he offers relationship advice, his children don’t need Google.
They’ve been watching the story from the front row.
