A former paramedic, Stephen Doohan, has been jailed for more than 10 years and permanently struck off after causing his pregnant partner to lose her unborn child in a calculated attack.

Doohan, who worked for the Scottish Ambulance Service, secretly administered the abortion drug Misoprostol to the woman without her consent in 2023. He had researched the drug using workplace systems before carrying out the act.

The victim, who believed she was in a consensual relationship with him, later suffered severe pain and bleeding, and was told at hospital she had miscarried. Investigations revealed Doohan had deliberately caused the pregnancy loss and initially tried to cover it up.

In 2025, he was convicted at the High Court in Glasgow of assault and sexual assault, receiving a sentence of over a decade in prison. He was also placed on the sex offenders register and banned from contacting the victim indefinitely.

A tribunal by the Health and Care Professions Tribunal Service ruled that his actions were a serious abuse of trust and removed him from the profession. Authorities described the crime as “calculated and heinous,” highlighting the lasting physical and emotional harm caused to the victim.
