Nearly a Decade Later, Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Meyer Are Legally Single

For Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Meyer, the end of their marriage did not arrive with a dramatic announcement. It came quietly, through a court filing nearly a decade after they had already gone their separate ways.

According to documents filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court, the former couple’s marital status was officially terminated on September 21, restoring both to single status.

But even after such a long journey, the divorce is not completely finished.

The court has granted what is known as a bifurcation of marital status. In simple terms, Maguire and Meyer are legally divorced, while the court continues to oversee unresolved matters connected to their broader divorce settlement. The documents do not specify what those remaining issues involve.

Their separation dates back to 2016, after nine years of marriage. At the time, the couple emphasized that their biggest priority was their children, saying they wanted to continue raising them together with love, respect and friendship.

Four years later, in October 2020, Meyer formally filed for divorce.

What followed was a lengthy legal process, with the former spouses eventually agreeing to work with a private judge to address their remaining disputes and move toward a final settlement.

Maguire, 51, and Meyer, 49, share two children: daughter Ruby, 19, and son Otis, 17. Their decision to separate therefore became less about ending a family relationship and more about redefining it.

Life has since moved in different directions for both.

Meyer is now engaged to music executive Geoffrey Ogunlesi. The couple announced their engagement in August 2024 and welcomed a daughter earlier this year.

Maguire, meanwhile, has largely kept his private life away from the headlines while continuing his work in film.

So, almost ten years after the couple first announced their separation, the legal chapter of their marriage has finally changed its status.

The paperwork may say “single.” But the years of shared family life, two children and the unfinished financial and legal matters mean the story itself is not quite as simple as a final signature on a divorce document.
