RAF Fairford Investigation Deepens as Sixth Suspect Walks Free on Bail

The security alert around RAF Fairford has entered a new phase: the latest suspect has been released, but the questions surrounding the case remain firmly open.

A 25-year-old dual British-Iranian national, arrested in Westminster over suspected preparations for terrorist acts, has been released on bail while counter-terrorism detectives continue their investigation. Police also completed searches at two London properties connected to the inquiry.

His arrest followed the detention of five British men in their 20s, who were questioned after three suspicious vans were discovered near the Gloucestershire airbase. Those men were subsequently released on bail as investigators continued examining what had happened.

The case has attracted particular attention because RAF Fairford has been used by US military aircraft and has become part of the wider backdrop to the escalating confrontation between Washington and Tehran. Police say petrol was discovered in the suspicious vehicles, but no explosive devices were found.

What makes the investigation especially sensitive is the question of whether the incident was purely domestic or had an international dimension. Counter Terrorism Policing has said investigators are examining all possible lines of inquiry, including potential foreign-state involvement.

There have also been competing claims about Iran’s alleged role. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has referred to what he described as strong indications of Iranian involvement, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that Israel passed intelligence to Britain about what he called an Iranian-sponsored attack. Those claims remain part of the wider investigation rather than established findings.

For now, the most significant development may be what has not happened: no charges have been announced against the six men in connection with the Fairford incident, and the investigation remains active.

The immediate drama may have moved away from the airbase—but for British counter-terrorism investigators, the real story is still unfolding behind closed doors.
