Red carpets are rarely just about what celebrities wear. At the MTV Video Music Awards, an outfit can become its own headline — and Sombr’s appearance at the 2026 ceremony proved exactly that.
The singer arrived at the September 27 event in Los Angeles looking deliberately unconventional: a long, striped furry coat layered over his bare torso, black leather trousers and, at the centre of it all, a belt carrying one unmistakable word: “SEX.”
It did not take long for the internet to react.
Some viewers were unimpressed. One X user dismissed the outfit by writing, “this is not the serve he thought this was.” Others saw the styling completely differently, with another social media user defending the look: “sorry yall he ate down 😭”.
And just like that, Sombr’s fashion choice became part of the night’s wider conversation.
More Than Just a Red-Carpet Moment
There was another reason Sombr was at the VMAs — and it had nothing to do with fashion.
The singer took part in a tribute to the late George Michael, performing alongside RAYE and Teddy Swims. The tribute honoured Michael, who died on Christmas Day a decade ago and remains one of pop music’s most recognisable figures.
That performance gave Sombr’s appearance a second dimension: while his clothes generated the immediate social-media chatter, his place on the tribute stage put him within a much bigger musical moment.
The VMAs Have Always Loved a Fashion Shock
Sombr’s look may have divided online opinion, but the VMAs have a long history of turning celebrity fashion into cultural conversation.
Lady Gaga’s infamous meat dress at the 2010 ceremony remains one of the most recognisable red-carpet moments in awards-show history. Miley Cyrus also made headlines with her fashion choices when she hosted the ceremony in 2015.
Against that backdrop, Sombr’s furry coat, bare chest and provocative belt feel less like an isolated incident and more like another chapter in the VMAs tradition of artists using fashion to demand attention.
Hosted by Snoop Dogg at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, the 2026 VMAs combined contemporary pop culture with nostalgia, featuring tributes to Dolly Parton and George Michael alongside the Video Vanguard Award.
For Sombr, however, the night’s most immediate legacy may be simpler: one outfit, one word on a belt, and an internet divided over whether he nailed the look — or missed the mark.
