When a Ceasefire Still Sounds Like War

A ceasefire is supposed to mean that the bombs stop.

In Gaza, Saturday brought a different reality.

Five Palestinians were killed and six others wounded after an Israeli airstrike struck a residential apartment in western Gaza City, according to Palestinian medical and local sources. The dead included four women, among them two Christians, and a young man.

The strike hit the Asala residential building early in the morning. Witnesses said at least two missiles slammed into the apartment, destroying it and damaging neighbouring homes. The bombardment also triggered a fire, turning what should have been a place of shelter into a scene of destruction.

But the apartment was only one part of a wider pattern reported across the Strip.

In northeastern Gaza City, Israeli forces reportedly demolished buildings and facilities in areas under their control east of Tuffah. Farther south, artillery fire struck areas around Khan Younis and north of Rafah, while heavy gunfire was reported in the same areas. In central Gaza, Israeli military vehicles opened fire east of the Bureij refugee camp.

The numbers reveal why the latest deaths are being viewed not as an isolated incident, but as another chapter in a continuing crisis.

Gaza’s Health Ministry reported that Israeli violations since the October 2025 ceasefire had already killed 1,439 Palestinians and wounded 5,052 by October 1. The ministry’s broader tally puts the Palestinian death toll since the war began in October 2023 at more than 74,000, with more than 175,000 wounded.

And behind every statistic is a place that once had a name: a home, a family, a neighbour, a person asleep when the sound of aircraft replaced the silence of the night.

That is the contradiction Gaza continues to live with.

The agreement may be called a ceasefire. But for many Palestinians beneath the drones, artillery fire and rubble, the distinction between war and peace remains painfully difficult to hear.
